Sydney Japanese International School OPEN DAY August 2022

Sydney Japanese International School will host their long-awaited Open Day, on-campus, on Sunday 21 August 2022.

Sydney Japanese International School welcomes families from all nationalities and backgrounds to participate in its unique learning experiences, rich in Japanese and Australian culture and virtues. Current students will take you on a school tour after a presentation by the Principal and the Head of International Division. The day will conclude with a sausage sizzle where you can have a chat with the school staff and students.

Sydney Japanese International School is a bilingual, non-denominational and co-educational school situated in Terrey Hills in the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney. Originally founded in 1969 as a primary school for Japanese expatriates, it has transformed into a school offering two primary school curriculums, Japanese and Australian, with a high school section (Year 7 to 9) for the Japanese Division.

International Division (Kindergarten to Year 6) follows the NSW syllabus set by NESA, the same as a local Australian primary school. The biggest difference is that it offers daily Japanese language lessons taught by qualified native Japanese speaking teachers. The language classes are organised into 3 levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced) according to the students’ abilities. Students are exposed to and immersed in Japanese language and culture on a daily basis which contributes to their rapid development as a bilingual learner.

Japanese Division (Year 1 to Year 9) offers the same curriculum as taught in Japan with the added benefit of daily levelled English language lessons (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Teachers in the Japanese Division are current teachers in Japan who have been carefully selected by the government to teach in Australia. Expatriate students who return to Japan have a seamless transition into the school system, as they are provided with high quality Japanese education, right here in Sydney.

The Japanese and International Divisions work towards the same vision of becoming a ‘Kakehashi’, a strong bridge, connecting communities and cultures nurturing future global leaders.

The two divisions study side-by-side sharing many school events such as Sports Day, Language Festivals, School Concert, as well as mixed bilingual lessons in music, visual art, PE and coding. Mixed lessons are a wonderful way to bring together the two divisions and provide students with an opportunity to learn from one another. These lessons provide an authentic context for students to use newly acquired language skills and provide context for tacit learning – a natural transfer of language skills and knowledge.

Sydney Japanese International School is looking forward to showing families around their beautiful school and showcasing their unique educational offerings this August.
