St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace: Student wellbeing

Student wellbeing is a topic of great interest in education circles, particularly with mental health among adolescents a growing concern. The first student need that must be satisfied by an educational institution is the need to feel known and accepted and to have a sense of comfort and order at their school.

This leads to students attaining positive attitudes and perceptions to their school and gives them the best chance of success.

In Semester 2 of 2019, St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace in Queensland opened its new student wellbeing centre, known as Mt Sion. This name takes its origins from the first school opened by our founder, Blessed Edmund Rice, who was also founder of the Christian Brothers.

The new facility brings together all of the College’s services that cater to the needs of the Terrace Gentlemen. The building houses the College’s main reception, along with the pastoral hub of the Student Services Office, Studies Office, Counselling Services, Campus Ministry and Sick Bay. All this, combined with huge covered spaces for play and gathering, is sure to make the recently completed project an even better home away from home for all Terrace students.

St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace looks forward showcasing these new facilities at its Open Day on 19 August, between 3:30 and 6:00pm.

Current members of the Terrace Family are sure to arrive in large numbers to inspect this wonderful new resource, but we also warmly invite all visitors to come along and see what makes Terrace such a wonderful school.

The Open Day will give visitors the opportunity to view displays of all of the College’s offerings – pastoral, academic, spiritual, cultural and sporting. Visitors may wish to listen to an address from the College Principal, meet and chat with key staff or take a student-led tour of the campus facilities.

According to St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, schools must continue to grow and evolve in order to keep pace with educational and societal change. There are many ingredients that combine to make Terrace one of Queensland’s leaders in Catholic education. The new wellbeing centre is one such innovation that provides its students with every opportunity to be the best they can be.

After its humble beginnings some 144 years ago, St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace continues to go from strength to strength.
