Wesley college rolls out IB from early childhood

Wesley College has become Victoria’s first authorised International Baccalaureate ‘Continuum School’ to offer the IB curriculum from Early Childhood through to Senior School.

The announcement follows the College’s authorisation by the IB to offer the IB Middle Years Program, 26 years after it became one of the first schools in Victoria to introduce the IB Diploma in 1991.

The IB offers an internationally recognised concept driven curriculum that continues to gain popularity among some of Australia’s leading schools in both the independent and state sectors.

Wesley College Principal Dr Helen Drennen said simultaneously implementing the Middle Years Program across all three of their campuses was no small feat.

“Becoming an accredited three-program IB school was a big task for the College to undertake, but one integral to the ongoing development of our educational offering.

“Teaching is a collaborative enterprise and our teachers operate as a collective learning community both within our three metropolitan campuses, and as part of a global network of innovative IB educators.

“The IB has an international reputation for nurturing high standards of teaching, leadership and student excellence – which are standards Wesley reflects,” she said.

Wesley College Executive Director of Curriculum and International Strategy Isaac Quist said the IB curriculum gives students a strong foundation for their education.

“The IB’s inquiry and concept-based approaches to learning enable our teachers to tailor content to students’ individual interests, enhancing the development of critical knowledge, skills and attitudes.

“The IB Programs encourage students of all ages to think globally, take risks and actively engage in their community.

“The MYP provides a strong foundation for senior students who can choose to pursue either the VCE or IB Diploma in Senior School,” he said.

Approximately 46 per cent of Year 12 students at Wesley have elected to take the IB Diploma Program pathway in 2018.

Wesley College is a coeducational, open entry school that was established more than 150 years ago.

The College has educated thousands of students through its liberal, broad-based curriculum across the three metropolitan campuses of St Kilda Road, Elsternwick and Glen Waverley, with full time and weekly boarding options available at Glen Waverley.
