Saint Stephen’s College students named ‘kidpreneurs’

Five Year 5-6 students from Saint Stephen’s College in Queensland have won the national Kidpreneur Challenge Unleashed for designing, manufacturing and marketing a durable lightweight pet location device.

The winning students were part of the school’s i-Find business team.

College Science teacher, Jacinda Kontoleon, said the competition received contributions from more than 5000 students from schools across Australia.

“I am so proud of students Kelsie Ball, Jay Magnuson, Oscar Williams, Amy Jo and Ethan Jones who were selected by the judging panel as the winners of the 2018 competition, from more than 1000 team entries,” she said.

The iFind team designed, manufactured, marketed and sold a pet location device that they engineered to be lightweight durable and affordable.

“They were praised for ‘building an awesome business and producing an excellent pitch video’ and demonstrating creativity, business acumen and confidence, which are critical skills to prepare them for a successful future,” added Ms Kontoleon.

She said that these types of projects fit perfectly within the College’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) curriculum, where students are encouraged to create, problem solve and have fun, describing the experience as being of immense value.

“Saint Stephen’s College received special mention for the high level of innovation and professionalism for all of our entries, with all of the students in the Year 5-60 class doing an amazing job. However, without the help of our remarkable teaching staff it would not have been possible, and many thanks go to them for their hard work, support and commitment,” said Ms Kontoleon.

“This includes Georgia Coventry (Media) for help with footage editing, our Math and Science Departments, Sam Reynolds (Head of Arts and Applied Technology) for design advice, Stuart Mattress (Media) for helping to bring our many crazy ideas to fruition and Louisa Ogden (Year 5-6O teacher), for the many hours, evenings and weekends engaging her students in an amazing learning experience.”
