Barker College opens new Prep classrooms

There was lots of excitement, smiles and looks of wonderment on the faces of Barker College’s youngest students as they returned from their term break to a brand new Preparatory building.

Located adjacent to Barker College’s existing Junior School, the Kurrajong Building, brings the Pre-K to Year 2 members of the Barker community within the fold of the Junior School. The name of the building reflects the historical beginnings of the School at Kurrajong Heights in 1890.

According to the Sydney-based School, the building captures the essence of a future focused teaching and learning space – light and open, with maker spaces and areas for groups to gather together. It also allows greater access to the vast resources on the main campus.

Head of Barker College, Mr Phillip Heath AM said, “The building offers greater learning flexibility with areas where both students and teachers can collaborate and utilise the vast maker spaces.”

The new classrooms look out onto a type of village square where children and adults alike can gather.

“This is part of the Reggio Emilia philosophy of learning that the School follows in early years,” Mr Heath explained, “which embraces building a strong learning community.”

Judging by the look on the children’s faces as they arrived for their first morning in their new classrooms and playground, the Kurrajong Building and all that it encompasses, is set to become a significant moment in the journey of Barker’s students.
